Anyone that knows me can verify I am pretty obsessed with Star Realms. I am also pretty finicky when it comes to card sleeves. Come to think about it, I am pretty much obsessed with anything that helps me organize. So when Legion Supplies announced a Star Realms big box and card sleeves, my OCD cannons fired on all sides. What does this storage box really have to offer?
What’s Under the Hood?
I am pretty active online and in several Star Realms communities. I play on the table and online all the time. My screen name is MrRadar, for those who want to end their winning streak. There seems to be a little confusion as to what this box will hold and what comes with it. Let’s take a look and end all the rumors.
For starters, it comes with a storage box. It’s late. Let me have my bad jokes. What else do you get? You get 224 new Star Realms card sleeves from Legion, enough for 2 Star Realms decks; 4 Full color dividers to help you keep your decks separated; to top it all off, 3 copies of a pretty sweet Promo: Mercenary Garrison. Legion also claims that this box will hold up to 3 sleeved decks of Star Realms. We’ll have to see about that.
Let’s Get All Scientifical
A few months ago I did a review on The Big Geeky Box for Smash Up, I don’t think it’s a secret I have a thing for game boxes and accessories. Also, it’s pretty clear I like stats and finding the value in the things to support my gaming habit…err, hobby. Let’s take a look at the specifics of the new box.
The original box for Star Realms is 1.75” Wide, 2.75” Long and 3.75” High. This gives the box a volume of 18 cubic inches. I know, seems like too much but that’s how math works. The new box from Legion is 8” Long, 4.25” Wide and 3” High; giving the Legion Star Realms box 102 cubic inches of space. Whoa! That’s a lot of SPACE for Star Realms. Ha, see what I did there…forget it. Back to the science! This gives 466% more storage capacity for our Star Realms decks. That’s quite a bit of an upgrade for storage.
The box itself is a card board flip box. Don’t let that fool you though. The box has no play in the hinge or the tuck teeth. So it holds closed really solid. Additionally, the box has artwork printed on all sides and is coated to help with water resistance. The inside also has a coating to help maintain the structure of the box as well as some water resistance. Could it have been made of a strong material? Yes. Does it need to be, no. Personally, I feel this storage box matches the price point right on and with everything that comes inside is a true value.
All of the Things!
We know the details of the box. We know what comes in it. Now how much can we put in it? Well, as you can see below, Legion was not lying. You can in fact fit 3 completely sleeved decks of Star Realms in this box. I also have several Promo cards in each of those decks. In the end, it fits 3 decks and then some. I guess we have to believe the back of the box now. Science and what not.
How am I personally going to use the new box? As you saw, I have 3 decks. I also have 3 complete sets of all 4 expansion packs and promos for all of my decks. I guess I am going to need 1 more box and some extra sleeves. In the first box, I am going to store all of the supplies I use regularly. This includes: 1 Star Realms deck, 4 Crisis expansion Packs, 1 Gambit expansion and 4 Squishy Foam D10’s, to keep track of life. This is everything I will need for most of my games. In my second box, I will have 2 decks, each with a full set of Crisis expansions. Woot! All of the things are sleeved and properly stored away. My OCD cannons have lowered.
No Sleeve, No Shuffle, No Game
Legion has also released new card sleeves that you get in the storage box. However, you can buy them separately in packs of 50. Fun fact about Mike, he is a card sleeve snob. I have spent more time searching for the perfect card sleeves, then an Italian Truffle Farmer searching for their fungusy gold. So needless to say, my cards were already sleeved but I wanted to try these out.
At first, I was a little hesitant. Right out of the package the sleeves are stiffer then I like and were not shuffling easy like I want. I have spent a lot of time trying new kinds of card sleeves and I know you just have to play with them a couple times and let them wear in some. I have to say, after a few shuffles I could feel the sleeves start to soften up and shuffle with greater ease. Ahh…there it is. It may not seem like much to you now but if you have ever had to endure a Mike rant about card sleeves, what I am about to say has a lot of weight. Not only do I like these sleeves but I have replaced the sleeves I was using with all the new Star Realms sleeves.
Alliance Triggers for Everyone
Alright, let’s take a quick look at the promo card that comes in the storage box, Mercenary Garrison. Like the Merc Carrier in the Gambit set, it is unaligned so it does not trigger other cards’ Alliance bonuses when they are played, but what it does have is a 4-way Alliance bonus from other cards played.
We have a Star Fleet trigger for 2 Damage. A Federation trigger for 3 Authority. A Mech trigger allowing you to scrap a card in your hand or discard pile. A Blob trigger of being able to scrap up to 2 cards in the trade row. Whoa, say what? The first 3 triggers, while they are good, the Blob trigger is crazy bananas good. I have found most people really under estimate the ability to have more control over the trade row. Not only can you cycle the trade row out to give you better buy options but it allows you to deny your opponent cards.
Here is the really cool thing about these alliance triggers, they will happen if you play a card from each faction. So that can be an extra 2 Damage, 3 Authority Gain, Deck thinning and control over the trade row. All from a single card. Oh yeah, it’s also a 5 Outpost for only the cost of 4 trade. Such a powerful card and you get 3 in this box! (1 for each deck that fits in a box. Clever girl.)
Is it Worth It?
Yes. Most certainly. If you carry Star Realms in your store, your customers are going to really like this. You could even use it as a prize incentive for the tournament kits from White Wizard Games. At only $20.00, this storage box, with a small mountain of card sleeves and sweet promo cards is worth it, for sure.
