Great news, retailers! International Tabletop Day is back and scheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2017. This year’s event promises to be bigger than ever and the organizers at Geek & Sundry have made this year’s store event kits better than ever. Let’s take a moment to review how you can get involved in this worldwide event.
Step 1: Sign-up And Review the Kit Options
Next, you are going to want to review the list of publishers and their contributions to this year’s event kit. The kits will still contain all of the great swag that you’ve come to expect, but now they will come with a few customizable options so that each store can fine tune the kit that they receive… à la carte’ style.
The core kit contains lots of great promotional materials to help you advertise and host the event. Then, to really ramp up the excitement, you can choose which add-ons that you wish to include in your customized kit. For now, there is a limit of one of each item per location and there is a still a possibility of last minute additions. When your ready, just let your Coqui Account Manager know which optional items that you want.

Step 2: Start Promoting the Event
Reach out on your store’s social media accounts to let people know that April 29 is the day to come and show their love of tabletop gaming. Make sure you promote the event on your store’s calendar or bulletin board as well. You can use the following assets to help you promote International Tabletop Day 2017 in style.
Also, you can help build-up excitement by encouraging your followers to participate in the event beforehand by having them share their stories about how tabletop games have changed their lives. Just guide them over to the ITTD Facebook page or Twitter with #tabletopday and ask them to share their experiences with the gaming community.
Step 3: Host An Amazing International Tabletop Day
Here’s a few quick tips to help you have a fun and successful International Tabletop Day in your store.
1. Prep Your Games – Whether you plan on spotlighting games from your library or making it a free for all, take the time to inspect your titles to confirm that all of the pieces are present and accounted for. It could be a real downer if players suddenly realize that they can’t finish the game because an important card is missing. Also, if you plan on opening some new games for the event or featuring some of the kit’s spotlighted titles, make sure all of the pieces are punched out and ready to play. Spending 15 minutes prepping the game is probably not what your guests had in mind when they showed up.
Also, the same thing goes for role-playing games. Make sure that you have dice and pencils for players to use and plenty of pregenerated characters for them to play.
2. Know Your Games – Make sure that have your most knowledgeable staff on during the event. Inevitably, players will have a question concerning the rules and having someone who can answer them quickly will keep the day from grinding to a halt. You can usually look up the rules on line fairly easily and you can often search for information on specific aspects of the game. If the answer to their question is elusive, ask the players if they would be willing make a quick house rule for the time being. Let’s keep it fast and fun!
3. Make Guests Feel Welcome – The intent of this event is introduce friends and family to the hobby. So, make sure that you have plenty of chairs and tables to accommodate everyone. If possible, have a greeter help folks find a game to play and a place to sit. If your store starts filling up, they can help decrease the awkwardness of bringing new arrivals to a table with a game in progress. Also, if it’s in your budget, offer snacks and drinks to guest. If not, you might want to consider supporting a local non-profit by offering them a venue to sell snacks and drinks to raise money for their cause.
4. Take Lots of Pictures – This event only occurs once a year. Make it festive, and promote it heavily. Make sure that your web site or social media pages have lots of material to highlight the event. Consider live video options as well to help capitalize on the excitement. Tag it with #tabletopday so folks everywhere can see what’s going on at your store.
