Flag Dash takes place over multiple rounds until one team returns home with the opposing team’s flag or collects a complete set of flags the opposing characters are wearing. In every round, you plan two moves in advance, and for each move, you choose to move either the runner you control—with a unique special ability—or the defender you share with your teammate.
After players have planned their moves and assigned priority tokens, the priority tokens are revealed, and the planned action cards are resolved in priority order. That means, though you may have had the best of intentions as you prepared you cards, things may not always work out the way you wanted as other players possibly resolve their actions first.
The actions players will be taking involve moving around the board and grabbing flags from adjacent players or the enemy team flag. After each player has performed an action, each player’s second action is then performed, again in priority order. However, it’s important to keep track of spent priority tokens, as they can’t be reused until the 7 priority token is used, which has the ability of reclaiming a player’s spent tokens. Other slow-priority tokens have abilities as well, such as granting the ability to play additional cards, which will allow you to adjust your strategy mid-round at the cost of acting later than other players.
The game is easy to learn because of the simple mechanisms, but the way the programming works and is resolved, and with all the special character powers, Flag Dash offers plenty of tactical options and strategies. The game is designed to be played by four players on two teams of two, but the gameplay variants offer options for player counts of two and three as well.
